Bismarck is the capital of North Dakota, set on the east bank of the Missouri River across from Mandan. State government is a major employer, and the city has become a center for energy, healthcare and finance, with MDU Resources headquartered here and many companies involved in the oil fields of the Bakken to the west. The city’s skyline is dominated by the State Capitol, a 19-story Art Deco tower known as the Skyscraper on the Prairie, and its history stretches back to the Mandan villages and the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Bismarck Municipal Airport is just south of downtown, but nonstop airline service is limited, and the oil patch, farm country and smaller towns of western North Dakota are hours away by car. Flying private lets energy and agriculture professionals cover a lot of ground in a day and return home. Visitors come for the State Capitol and the North Dakota Heritage Center, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, where Custer’s house has been reconstructed, and the Missouri River, with Theodore Roosevelt National Park about two hours west.

Things to do in Bismarck

When to go. Summer is Bismarck’s most popular season, with warm days for exploring the river, the state parks and the Badlands. Early September brings the United Tribes International Powwow, one of the largest in the region. Fall offers crisp weather and colorful cottonwoods along the river. The legislature meets in odd-numbered years from January into spring, and winters are long and very cold.
