Oklahoma City is the state capital and its largest city, and its economy still leans on oil and natural gas, with Devon Energy headquartered in a tower that dominates the downtown skyline. Aviation is the other pillar: Tinker Air Force Base is one of the Air Force’s largest maintenance depots, and the FAA’s Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center trains air traffic controllers from across the country. Add state government, the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and a downtown rebuilt through decades of voter-approved MAPS projects, and the city draws a steady stream of executives, engineers and officials.

Oklahoma City spreads across a huge footprint, and the big airport sits southwest of downtown while many offices and homes are to the north. Flying private lets you use Wiley Post Airport near the northwest business corridors, then fly direct to a ranch, a refinery town or a meeting in Tulsa or Dallas without connecting. Visitors come for the Oklahoma City National Memorial, Bricktown’s canal and ballpark, Western art at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Thunder basketball and Sooner football in Norman, about 20 miles south.

Things to do in Oklahoma City

When to go. Spring and fall are the best seasons in Oklahoma City, with mild temperatures and full event calendars. The Festival of the Arts fills downtown in late April, and the Oklahoma State Fair runs in September. Spring is also severe-weather season on the plains, so watch forecasts from April through June. Summers are hot and often windy, while winters are mostly mild with occasional ice storms that can disrupt travel.
