Tulsa grew rich as the Oil Capital of the World in the early 20th century, and that money left behind one of the finest collections of Art Deco buildings in the country. Energy remains central, with Williams and ONEOK headquartered downtown, and aerospace is just as important: American Airlines runs a huge maintenance base at Tulsa International, surrounded by suppliers and manufacturers. The city’s philanthropic foundations have poured money into parks, museums and programs that recruit remote workers, giving Tulsa a cultural life well beyond its size.

Tulsa sits roughly halfway between Dallas and Kansas City, and reaching it on the airlines usually means a connection. Flying private gets you there direct, and Tulsa Riverside Airport in the south part of the metro is convenient to Jenks, Bixby and the neighborhoods along the Arkansas River. Leisure travelers come for the Gathering Place, the Philbrook Museum of Art, the Tulsa Arts District with its Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie centers, Greenwood’s history and the Route 66 landmarks along 11th Street, and Grand Lake and the Osage Hills are a short hop away.

Things to do in Tulsa

When to go. Spring and fall bring Tulsa’s most pleasant weather. Mayfest fills downtown with art and music in May, Tulsa Tough brings criterium bike racing to the streets in June, and the Tulsa State Fair runs from late September into October. April through June is the peak of severe-storm season, so stay flexible. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are generally mild with occasional ice.
