Newport sits at the southern tip of Aquidneck Island, at the mouth of Narragansett Bay. In the late 19th century, America’s wealthiest families built their summer “cottages” here, and mansions like The Breakers and Marble House remain some of the most visited historic houses in the country. Newport is also one of the world’s great sailing towns, the longtime home of the America’s Cup, and it hosts the Naval War College and Naval Station Newport, Salve Regina University, and an economy driven by tourism, marine trades and defense.
Newport is roughly an hour and a half from Boston and three to four hours from New York by car, with traffic across the bridges onto the island on busy summer weekends. Flying private into T. F. Green or nearby Quonset State Airport, across the bay in North Kingstown, saves time and keeps the weekend about Newport itself. Visitors tour the mansions along Bellevue Avenue, walk the Cliff Walk, sail on Narragansett Bay, eat lobster and chowder along the wharves and attend the Newport Jazz and Folk festivals.
