Westerly sits in Rhode Island’s southwestern corner along the Pawcatuck River, where the state meets Connecticut. Its historic downtown grew around textile mills and granite quarries, and today the town is best known for its seaside villages: Watch Hill, with its Victorian summer homes, the Ocean House hotel and the Flying Horse Carousel, and Misquamicut, with its long public beach. Tourism, second homes, healthcare and local businesses make up much of the economy.
Westerly is about two and a half hours from New York and an hour and a half from Boston, but summer traffic on I-95 and the shore roads can stretch either trip considerably. Westerly State Airport is just outside downtown, close to Watch Hill and the beaches, and it is the mainland base for small-plane flights to Block Island. That makes a private flight the simplest way to reach a summer house or a weekend at Ocean House. Visitors spend their days on the beaches, sailing out of Watch Hill harbor and exploring nearby Mystic, Stonington and the casino resorts.
