Chattanooga sits in a bend of the Tennessee River surrounded by mountains, and the city has transformed itself from an industrial town into one of the South’s most livable cities. Volkswagen builds vehicles at its plant on the city’s east side, insurance giant Unum and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee are headquartered here, and McKee Foods, the maker of Little Debbie snacks, is based in nearby Collegedale. The city-owned electric utility built one of the first citywide fiber networks in the country, which helped attract technology startups and remote workers.
