Chattanooga sits in a bend of the Tennessee River surrounded by mountains, and the city has transformed itself from an industrial town into one of the South’s most livable cities. Volkswagen builds vehicles at its plant on the city’s east side, insurance giant Unum and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee are headquartered here, and McKee Foods, the maker of Little Debbie snacks, is based in nearby Collegedale. The city-owned electric utility built one of the first citywide fiber networks in the country, which helped attract technology startups and remote workers.

Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is just a few miles east of downtown, and flying private saves the two-hour drive to Atlanta or Nashville for a connection. The city has built its identity around the outdoors, with rock climbing, mountain biking, hang gliding and paddling all close at hand and whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River, the 1996 Olympic venue, about an hour east. Visitors also come for the Tennessee Aquarium, the Walnut Street Bridge and the Bluff View Art District, and Lookout Mountain’s Rock City, Ruby Falls and Incline Railway are classic Southern attractions.

October brings brilliant color to Lookout and Signal mountains, and early November’s Head of the Hooch draws rowers from across the country to one of the largest regattas in the world. Summer is warm and humid but ideal for river paddling and Ocoee rafting. Winters are mild.
