Murfreesboro is one of the fastest-growing cities in Tennessee, sitting about 35 miles southeast of Nashville near the geographic center of the state. Middle Tennessee State University, one of the largest universities in Tennessee, is its anchor, and the surrounding Rutherford County economy includes the Nissan assembly plant in Smyrna, distribution centers along Interstate 24, healthcare and a growing number of corporate offices. Murfreesboro served briefly as Tennessee’s capital in the early 19th century, and its downtown square is centered on one of the state’s few antebellum courthouses still in use.

Interstate 24 between Murfreesboro and Nashville is one of the most congested commutes in the region, and Murfreesboro Municipal Airport, close to downtown and MTSU, lets you fly in without going through Nashville at all. Business travelers can reach offices, plants and distribution centers quickly, and families visiting MTSU can skip the drive from the city. Visitors come for Stones River National Battlefield, the restored Oaklands Mansion and the historic courthouse square, and Murfreesboro is a short drive from Lynchburg’s Jack Daniel Distillery and the horse country around Shelbyville, home of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration.
