Knoxville is the largest city in East Tennessee, home to the flagship University of Tennessee and the headquarters of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Just west of the city, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the largest science and energy laboratory in the Department of Energy system, anchors a cluster of research, nuclear and advanced manufacturing companies. The Pilot Company, which runs the Pilot and Flying J travel centers, is based here, and healthcare and logistics round out the economy. Downtown’s Market Square and Old City are lively, and the city’s outdoor culture has grown around its Urban Wilderness trails.

Knoxville’s main airport is south of the city in Alcoa, while Downtown Island Airport sits on the Tennessee River just minutes from the university and downtown, and flying private lets business visitors reach Oak Ridge or UT without a connection through a larger hub. On fall Saturdays, UT football at Neyland Stadium draws more than 100,000 fans. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the country, is about an hour away, and many travelers use Knoxville as a base for the mountains or for lake houses on Norris, Tellico and Fort Loudoun lakes.
