Nashville is Tennessee’s capital and the center of the country music industry, with record labels, publishers and studios clustered along Music Row. It is also one of the nation’s healthcare capitals: HCA Healthcare is headquartered here, and hundreds of healthcare companies, along with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, make the industry the city’s largest. Finance, insurance, technology and state government round out an economy that has drawn corporate relocations and steady population growth, and Vanderbilt and Belmont universities add to the city’s energy.

That growth has made traffic and airline schedules busier, and flying private lets you choose your departure time and avoid the crowded main terminal. John C. Tune Airport, west of downtown, is convenient to the city’s western neighborhoods, while airports in Smyrna and Lebanon serve the fast-growing suburbs. Visitors come for live music in every form, from the honky-tonks of Lower Broadway to the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry, and for hot chicken, the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Parthenon in Centennial Park. Franklin, Leiper’s Fork and the Natchez Trace Parkway are short drives south.

When to go. Spring and fall are Nashville’s best seasons, with mild weather for walking downtown and catching outdoor concerts. CMA Fest, a four-day country music festival with stadium concerts, takes over downtown in early June, and the Iroquois Steeplechase brings a festive day of racing to Percy Warner Park in May. Summers are hot and humid, and New Year’s Eve brings a big downtown celebration. Winters are mild with occasional ice.
