Bristol is a city split by a state line: State Street runs right along the Tennessee–Virginia border, with Bristol, Tennessee on one side and Bristol, Virginia on the other. Its place in music history was secured in 1927, when the Bristol Sessions recorded the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers, earning the city recognition from Congress as the Birthplace of Country Music. Today the local economy includes manufacturing, healthcare, retail and tourism, and the Hard Rock casino resort on the Virginia side has added a new entertainment draw.

Bristol Motor Speedway, a high-banked half-mile oval known as the Last Great Colosseum, hosts NASCAR races that fill the region, and the stadium setting has even been converted for major college football and baseball games. On race weekends, roads and hotels across the Tri-Cities are packed, and flying private into Tri-Cities Airport or Virginia Highlands Airport in nearby Abingdon is the easiest way to get in and out. Outside of race weeks, visitors come for the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, the shops and restaurants of State Street, trout fishing on the South Holston River and the Virginia Creeper Trail.
