Things to do in Boone

Boone is the center of North Carolina’s High Country, a cluster of mountain towns that includes Blowing Rock, Banner Elk and Linville at elevations of more than 3,000 feet. Appalachian State University gives the town a young, outdoorsy energy, while tourism, second homes, construction and healthcare carry the rest of the economy. Many of the area’s homes belong to families from Charlotte, Florida and the Southeast lowlands who come for cool summers and colorful falls.

  1. 01

    Grandfather Mountain

The rugged peak near Linville is known for its Mile High Swinging Bridge, native animal habitats and challenging backcountry hiking trails with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge.

  2. 02

    Blowing Rock

This family theme park between Boone and Blowing Rock features a historic narrow-gauge steam train ride through the mountains, with a Wild West theme and live shows.

  5. 05

    Sugar and Beech Mountain

Two of the Southeast’s highest ski areas operate in winter near Banner Elk, and Beech Mountain’s lifts carry mountain bikers and sightseers in summer.

  6. 06

    Downtown Boone

King Street’s restaurants, bookstores and outfitters are a short walk from the App State campus, and the Doc Watson statue honors the region’s famous musician.
