Things to do in Pine Mountain

Pine Mountain is a small town in west Georgia best known as the home of Callaway Gardens, a resort and garden of several thousand acres created by textile industrialist Cason Callaway and his wife Virginia in the 1950s. The resort’s azalea displays, butterfly conservatory, golf, lakes and beach have made it a family tradition for generations of Southerners, and its conference facilities draw corporate retreats. The surrounding area is rich in history, from President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Little White House in Warm Springs to the ridge of Pine Mountain itself.

  2. 02

    Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center

Inside Callaway Gardens, a glass conservatory filled with tropical plants holds hundreds of free-flying butterflies from around the world, a favorite with families on any day.

  3. 03

    Robin Lake Beach

Callaway’s white-sand beach on Robin Lake is a summer gathering place for swimming, paddleboats and lounging, with water activities that make it popular with families.

  4. 04

    Roosevelt’s Little White House

In nearby Warm Springs, the modest cottage where FDR sought relief from polio and died in 1945 is preserved as he left it, with a museum and the Unfinished Portrait.

    F.D. Roosevelt State Park

Georgia’s largest state park covers much of Pine Mountain ridge, with the 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail, lakes, cabins and stone structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

  6. 06

    Dowdell’s Knob

This overlook in the state park was one of Roosevelt’s favorite spots for picnics and quiet reflection, and a bronze statue of FDR now sits on the bluff above the valley.
