Pine Mountain is a small town in west Georgia best known as the home of Callaway Gardens, a resort and garden of several thousand acres created by textile industrialist Cason Callaway and his wife Virginia in the 1950s. The resort’s azalea displays, butterfly conservatory, golf, lakes and beach have made it a family tradition for generations of Southerners, and its conference facilities draw corporate retreats. The surrounding area is rich in history, from President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Little White House in Warm Springs to the ridge of Pine Mountain itself.

Pine Mountain is about 75 miles southwest of Atlanta, a drive that can take longer than expected with traffic on I-85 and the two-lane roads that follow. Flying private into Harris County Airport, a few minutes from Callaway Gardens, puts you at the resort in no time, with Columbus Airport about half an hour away as an alternative. It is an easy base for a weekend of golf and garden walks, a company offsite or a family reunion, with hiking in F.D. Roosevelt State Park, Georgia’s largest state park, just up the road.

Things to do in Pine Mountain

When to go. Spring is Pine Mountain’s showiest season, when Callaway’s azaleas reach their peak from late March into April. Summer is the season for Robin Lake Beach and family vacations, though days are hot and humid. Fall brings comfortable hiking weather and turning leaves on the ridge, and from mid-November into early January, Fantasy in Lights turns the gardens into one of the South’s best-known holiday light shows.
