Athens is home to the University of Georgia, chartered in 1785 as the first state-chartered public university in the country, and the campus shapes nearly everything about the city. Research, healthcare and university business bring a constant flow of visiting faculty, parents, recruiters and donors, while the downtown that borders North Campus is full of restaurants, bars and music venues. Athens also has an outsized place in rock history as the town that produced R.E.M. and the B-52’s, and live music remains a nightly fixture.

Athens is about 70 miles east of Atlanta, but there is no interstate between the two, and on football Saturdays the roads into town are packed for hours before and after kickoff. Flying private into Athens-Ben Epps Airport, a few miles from downtown, means you can arrive for a tailgate, walk to Sanford Stadium and fly home that night. It is just as useful for graduations, recruiting visits and board meetings. Visitors also come for the Georgia Museum of Art, the State Botanical Garden and a food scene that punches well above the size of the town.

Things to do in Athens

When to go. Fall is the busiest season in Athens, when football Saturdays fill hotels for miles and lodging should be booked well in advance. Spring brings blooming campus gardens and the Twilight Criterium bike race through downtown. Summer is hot and quieter with most students away, though AthFest brings outdoor music to downtown each June. Winters are mild, and commencement weekends in May and December draw large crowds of families.

    University of Georgia North Campus

The historic heart of the university is a shaded quadrangle of 19th-century buildings entered through the cast-iron Arch, which by tradition students do not walk under until they graduate.

  2. 02

    Sanford Stadium

Home of the Georgia Bulldogs, the stadium is known for the privet hedges that line the field and for game-day crowds of more than 90,000 that turn Athens red and black.

    Georgia Museum of Art

The official state museum of art, on the university’s East Campus, holds American paintings, decorative arts and works on paper, with free admission and rotating exhibitions.

South of campus, the garden includes themed gardens, a tropical conservatory and miles of wooded trails along the Middle Oconee River.

  5. 05

    Georgia Theatre

A downtown landmark rebuilt after a 2009 fire, this historic theater hosts touring bands and local acts, with a rooftop bar overlooking Lumpkin Street.

  6. 06

    Downtown Athens

The blocks facing North Campus are packed with independent restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, bars and clubs, including the 40 Watt Club, a fixture of the local music scene for decades.
