Rome was built on seven hills where the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers join to form the Coosa, and it remains the commercial and medical center of northwest Georgia. Healthcare is a major employer, with two hospitals and a large physician group, along with manufacturing and a growing number of industrial employers along the region’s highways. The city is also home to Berry College, whose campus is one of the largest in the world by area, and Shorter University.
Rome is about 70 miles northwest of Atlanta, and the drive via I-75 can be slow through Cobb County and beyond. Richard B. Russell Regional Airport, just north of town, is a short drive from downtown and the hospitals, making it simple for physicians, executives and families to fly in. Visitors come for the riverfront trails, the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College, historic Broad Street and the Clocktower, and the many fine homes of the city’s historic districts.
