Gainesville sits on the shores of Lake Lanier northeast of Atlanta and serves as the commercial center of the north Georgia region. It is known as the Poultry Capital of the World for its role in the chicken industry, and it also has a strong manufacturing base, a major regional medical center in Northeast Georgia Medical Center, and campuses of Brenau University and the University of North Georgia. Lake Lanier, created by the Corps of Engineers in the 1950s, draws boaters and second-home owners from across metro Atlanta.

Gainesville is about an hour from downtown Atlanta when traffic on I-985 and GA-400 is light, and much longer when it isn’t. Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport is right in town, minutes from the lake, the hospital and the industrial parks, so it is easy to fly in for a plant visit or a weekend on the water. The city is also a convenient gateway to the mountains, with the wineries of Dahlonega, the Alpine-style village of Helen and the trails of the Chattahoochee National Forest all within about an hour’s drive.
