Albany is the hub of southwest Georgia, a region where peanuts, pecans, cotton and timber are the backbone of the economy. The city is also home to the Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Albany State University and a regional medical center, and it is surrounded by historic plantations managed for quail hunting. Albany played an important role in the civil rights movement, and its downtown on the Flint River includes a plaza honoring native son Ray Charles.

Albany is about three hours from Atlanta by car, with no interstate for much of the drive, and it can be equally hard to reach from Florida or Alabama. Southwest Georgia Regional Airport is just a few minutes from downtown, making it easy for buyers, plantation guests and business travelers to come and go in a day. Visitors explore the Albany Civil Rights Institute, Chehaw Park and Zoo and Radium Springs, and make the drive north to Plains, the hometown of President Jimmy Carter.
