To much of the world, Augusta means one week in April, when the Masters Tournament is played at Augusta National Golf Club. The rest of the year, Georgia’s second-oldest city runs on healthcare, defense and industry: Augusta University and its Medical College of Georgia, a cluster of hospitals, the Army installation that is home to the Army’s cyber branch, and the Savannah River Site just across the river in South Carolina. The city also claims James Brown as a native son, and its downtown runs along the Savannah River and the historic Augusta Canal.

Augusta is about two and a half hours from Atlanta by car and farther from Charlotte, and airline seats into town are scarce and expensive during tournament week. Flying private lets you arrive in the morning, walk the course and fly home that night, or base a group in Aiken or Lake Oconee and commute in. Augusta Regional Airport handles most private traffic, with Daniel Field close to the city center for smaller aircraft. Outside Masters week, visitors come for the Riverwalk, canal boat tours, the Morris Museum of Art and the horse country of nearby Aiken.
