Columbus sits on the Chattahoochee River across from Alabama and is one of Georgia’s largest cities. Fort Benning, the Army’s home of the infantry and armor schools, lies just to the south and brings soldiers, families and contractors to town year-round. The city is also headquarters to Aflac and Synovus and a center for payments technology, with Columbus State University’s downtown campus adding arts and music programs. A riverfront revitalization has turned former mills into restaurants, lofts and performance spaces.

Columbus is roughly 100 miles from Atlanta, a drive that typically takes close to two hours and can stretch longer with metro traffic on I-85. Flying private into Columbus Airport, just a few minutes from downtown, makes a day of meetings or a training graduation easy to fit in, and families coming from across the Southeast can arrive together on their own schedule. Visitors come for the National Infantry Museum, rafting on one of the longest urban whitewater courses in the country, the RiverWalk and side trips to Callaway Gardens and Auburn.

Things to do in Columbus

When to go. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons in Columbus, with warm days that suit the RiverWalk and rafting on the Chattahoochee. Summer is hot and humid but prime time for whitewater, when the river runs warm. Graduation ceremonies at Fort Benning take place throughout the year, and hotels near the post fill quickly on those weekends. Winters are short and mild, with occasional cold snaps.
