Blue Ridge is a small mountain town in Fannin County, near the point where Georgia meets Tennessee and North Carolina. Once a railroad and copper-mining stop, it has become the north Georgia mountains’ busiest getaway, with a walkable downtown of restaurants, galleries and outfitters, and thousands of rental cabins and second homes tucked into the surrounding ridges. Tourism, real estate and construction are the main businesses, and many Atlanta families keep a place here for weekends.

The drive from Atlanta takes around two hours, with the final miles on winding mountain roads, and from Florida it is a long day behind the wheel. Flying private into a nearby regional airport, such as Blairsville, cuts the trip down and gets you to the cabin in time for dinner on the deck. Once there, days revolve around the Toccoa River, Lake Blue Ridge, the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, with apple picking in late summer and fall. Nearby Ellijay, Blairsville and the Tennessee towns of McCaysville and Copperhill extend the options for dining and shopping.
