Things to do in Sitka

Sitka sits on the outer coast of Baranof Island, facing the open Pacific with the volcanic cone of Mount Edgecumbe across the sound. For thousands of years it has been the home of the Tlingit people, and in the 1800s it was New Archangel, capital of Russian America; the formal transfer of Alaska to the United States took place here on Castle Hill in 1867. That layered history shows in the totem poles, Russian Orthodox cathedral and historic buildings that make Sitka one of the most distinctive towns in Alaska.
