Sitka sits on the outer coast of Baranof Island, facing the open Pacific with the volcanic cone of Mount Edgecumbe across the sound. For thousands of years it has been the home of the Tlingit people, and in the 1800s it was New Archangel, capital of Russian America; the formal transfer of Alaska to the United States took place here on Castle Hill in 1867. That layered history shows in the totem poles, Russian Orthodox cathedral and historic buildings that make Sitka one of the most distinctive towns in Alaska. Fishing, healthcare, education and tourism drive the economy.

Like most of Southeast Alaska, Sitka has no road connection to the outside, so visitors arrive by air or sea, and the airport sits on Japonski Island just across a bridge from downtown. Flying private makes it easy to reach Sitka for a fishing trip or combine it with Juneau and other Inside Passage towns. Anglers come for king and coho salmon and big halibut, while others watch sea otters and whales on wildlife cruises, walk the totem trail through the rain forest and visit the town’s raptor and bear rescue centers.

Things to do in Sitka

When to go. May through September is Sitka’s main season, with the best fishing, wildlife cruising and the longest days. King salmon run in late spring and early summer, coho in late summer, and halibut fishing is good all season. The Sitka Summer Music Festival brings chamber music to town in June, and the Alaska Day Festival around October 18 commemorates the 1867 transfer. Expect rain in any season.
