Talkeetna is a small, historic town where the Susitna, Chulitna and Talkeetna rivers meet, about 115 miles north of Anchorage. It is the traditional jumping-off point for climbers attempting Denali, North America’s highest peak, and the National Park Service’s Talkeetna Ranger Station handles their permits and briefings. The town’s air taxi operators fly climbers to the Kahiltna Glacier base camp and carry visitors on flightseeing trips around the mountain, and tourism, river guiding and fishing make up most of the local economy.

The drive from Anchorage takes around two and a half hours, and the town’s log cabins, historic roadhouse and gravel streets give it a frontier feel. Flying private into Talkeetna Airport, just steps from Main Street, puts you in position for a morning flightseeing trip with a glacier landing, when the mountain is often clearest. Visitors also float and fish the rivers, ride the Alaska Railroad, hike in Denali State Park and take in views of Denali, Mount Foraker and Mount Hunter from the riverbank on clear days.

Things to do in Talkeetna

When to go. Talkeetna is busiest from late May through early September, when lodges, river trips and flightseeing are in full swing and daylight lasts late into the night. Climbing season on Denali runs from about May through early July, and the town fills with mountaineers. Clear days are the key to seeing the mountain, so build in flexibility. Winter is quiet and cold, with dog mushing, snowmachining and the northern lights.
