Juneau is Alaska’s capital and one of the most unusual state capitals in the country: no road connects it to the rest of North America, so everyone arrives by air or by sea. Set between the steep mountains of the Juneau Icefield and the Gastineau Channel, the city was founded on a gold strike in 1880 and grew with large hard-rock mines. Today state government is the largest employer, alongside tourism, mining, fishing, healthcare and the University of Alaska Southeast, and in summer cruise ships bring large crowds to the downtown waterfront.

Because there’s no road in, air travel is how legislators, lobbyists, mining executives and visitors reach Juneau, and the weather in Southeast Alaska rewards flexible plans. Flying private lets you pick your departure time and route through the Inside Passage communities on your schedule. Once there, visitors hike the trails around Mendenhall Glacier, ride the tram up Mount Roberts, watch humpback whales in Auke Bay, cruise to the tidewater glaciers of Tracy Arm, and take floatplane or helicopter trips onto the icefield or out to remote fishing and bear-viewing lodges.

Things to do in Juneau

When to go. May through September is Juneau’s main season, when whales feed offshore, the tram and tours run and long daylight hours allow full days of exploring. Summer is also cruise season, so downtown can be crowded midday. Expect rain at any time of year: Juneau is in a temperate rain forest. The Legislature meets from January into May, and Celebration, a biennial gathering of Southeast Alaska Native cultures, takes place in June.
