Homer sits at the southern end of the Sterling Highway on the Kenai Peninsula, looking across Kachemak Bay to glaciers, fjords and the peaks of the Kenai Mountains. The town calls itself the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World, and its harbor on the Homer Spit, a narrow strip of land reaching more than four miles into the bay, is lined with charter boats, seafood shacks and shops. Commercial fishing, tourism, the arts and marine research shape the economy, and the town has a reputation as a haven for artists and independent spirits.

The drive from Anchorage covers more than 200 miles and takes four and a half hours or longer, with summer traffic and road work along the way. Flying private puts you at Homer Airport, a few minutes from the Spit, so a fishing trip or bay getaway does not start with a full day on the highway. Visitors come for halibut and salmon charters, kayaking and hiking in Kachemak Bay State Park across the water, water taxis to Halibut Cove and Seldovia, and floatplane trips to watch brown bears in Katmai and Lake Clark national parks.

Things to do in Homer

When to go. Late May through early September is the season in Homer, with long days, mild temperatures and peak fishing for halibut and salmon. The Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival celebrates the spring migration in May, when tens of thousands of shorebirds stop on the tidal flats. Bear viewing is excellent from June through August. Winters are long but relatively mild for Alaska, and the town is much quieter.
