Fairbanks is the largest city in Alaska’s Interior, a former Gold Rush town on the Chena River that serves as the supply hub for a vast region reaching north to the Arctic. The University of Alaska Fairbanks is a world center for Arctic research and geophysics, and Fort Wainwright and nearby Eielson Air Force Base make the military a major employer. Mining, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, government, healthcare and tourism round out the economy, along with the logistics of supplying villages and oil fields to the north.
Fairbanks is about six hours north of Anchorage by road, and many of the places people want to reach from here, from the Arctic Circle to remote lodges and mines, have no roads at all. Flying private gives you control over timing in a place where weather and daylight shape every plan. Visitors come for some of the best aurora viewing in the world from late summer through early spring, for the midnight sun in June, for Chena Hot Springs and the riverboat trips that showcase Interior life, and as a starting point for Denali National Park, about two hours south.

Things to do in Fairbanks
When to go. Fairbanks has two seasons that draw visitors. Summer brings warm days and nearly endless daylight, with the Midnight Sun Festival and a late-night baseball game around the June solstice. From late August through April, long, dark nights bring the northern lights, and the World Ice Art Championships draw carvers each February and March. Winter is extremely cold, often far below zero, so pack and plan accordingly.
