Things to do in Molokai

Kaunakakai is the main town on Molokai, a rural island between Oahu and Maui known as the Friendly Isle. Its single main street holds a few shops, a bakery and local eateries, and the long wharf reaches across the reef into the channel. The island has no high-rise hotels and no traffic lights, and many residents are Native Hawaiian, with ancient fishponds along the south shore, small farms and ranch land and a strong commitment to keeping the island rural. Agriculture, fishing, small businesses and a modest amount of tourism support the economy.

    Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove

Just west of town, this grove of tall coconut palms was planted in the 1860s for King Kamehameha V and is a popular photo stop.

  3. 03

    Halawa Valley

At the east end of the island, guided cultural hikes led by local families lead through this deep valley to a waterfall.

  4. 04

    Papohaku Beach

On the west end, this long, wide stretch of white sand is one of the largest beaches in Hawaii and is often nearly empty.
