Kaunakakai is the main town on Molokai, a rural island between Oahu and Maui known as the Friendly Isle. Its single main street holds a few shops, a bakery and local eateries, and the long wharf reaches across the reef into the channel. The island has no high-rise hotels and no traffic lights, and many residents are Native Hawaiian, with ancient fishponds along the south shore, small farms and ranch land and a strong commitment to keeping the island rural. Agriculture, fishing, small businesses and a modest amount of tourism support the economy.
The ferry to Molokai no longer runs, so nearly everyone arrives by air, and commercial service is limited to small commuter planes. Flying private into Molokai Airport, a few miles from Kaunakakai, lets you visit on your own schedule from Honolulu or Maui. Visitors come to see some of the highest sea cliffs in the world on the north shore, look down on the historic Kalaupapa peninsula, where Father Damien and Mother Marianne Cope served patients with Hansen’s disease, walk deserted beaches on the west end and experience a quieter side of Hawaii.

Things to do in Molokai
When to go. Molokai is warm year-round, with the south and west sides drier and sunnier than the windward east. Winter brings humpback whales offshore and big surf on the north shore, while summer offers calmer seas. Each fall, outrigger canoe teams race across the Kaiwi Channel from Molokai to Oahu in the Na Wahine O Ke Kai and Molokai Hoe. Accommodations are limited, so book well ahead for any trip.
