Lanai City is the only town on Lanai, a small island once covered by the world’s largest pineapple plantation. Built in the 1920s as a plantation town, it sits in the cool upland at the center of the island, with a village green of Cook pines surrounded by shops, cafés and plantation cottages. Most of the island is privately owned, and today tourism is almost the entire economy, centered on two luxury resorts: the Four Seasons at Manele Bay on the coast and Sensei Lanai, a wellness retreat near town.

Getting to Lanai usually means a ferry from Maui or a connecting flight on a small commuter airline, so many visitors take a private flight straight into Lanai Airport, a short drive from town and the resorts. That turns a trip from Honolulu into a quick hop across the channel. Once there, visitors snorkel and swim at Hulopoe Bay, play golf, explore red-dirt backroads to remote beaches and lookouts by four-wheel-drive, and enjoy an island with no traffic lights and very few people.

Things to do in Lanai

When to go. Lanai is pleasant year-round, with the coast warm and sunny and Lanai City cooler and breezier at elevation. Winter brings humpback whales into the channels between Lanai, Maui and Molokai from December through April. Summer offers the calmest seas for snorkeling and boating. Because there are only a few places to stay, plan well ahead for the winter holidays and spring.

  1. 01

    Hulopoe Beach

Below the Manele Bay resort, this crescent beach in a marine preserve offers excellent snorkeling and tidepools, and spinner dolphins often visit the bay.

  2. 02

    Puu Pehe

A short walk from Hulopoe Beach leads to cliffs overlooking Sweetheart Rock, a sea stack tied to a Hawaiian legend of two lovers.

  3. 03

    Keahiakawelo

Also called the Garden of the Gods, this otherworldly landscape of wind-sculpted red rocks and boulders lies along a dirt road north of town.

  4. 04

    Shipwreck Beach

On the windswept north coast, a long beach looks across to Molokai and toward the rusting hulk of a World War II–era ship on the reef.

  5. 05

    Lanai Culture & Heritage Center

In Lanai City, this small museum explores the island’s Native Hawaiian history, ranching era and pineapple plantation days.

  6. 06

    Dole Park

The town’s green square, shaded by tall Cook pines, is ringed by small shops, galleries and restaurants in restored plantation buildings.
