Things to do in Hilo

Hilo is the largest town on the Big Island and the county seat of Hawaii County, set on a crescent bay on the island’s green, rainy east side. It has an older, more local feel than the resort areas, with a historic downtown of wooden storefronts, a busy farmers market and neighborhoods shaped by the sugar era. The University of Hawaii at Hilo, healthcare, government, agriculture and the base facilities of the Mauna Kea observatories support the economy, and tourism centers on the nearby volcano.

    Akaka Falls State Park

North of Hilo, a short loop path through tropical rain forest leads to views of Akaka Falls, which plunges more than 400 feet into a gorge.

In Hilo itself, this waterfall on the Wailuku River often produces rainbows in its mist on sunny mornings.
