Hilo is the largest town on the Big Island and the county seat of Hawaii County, set on a crescent bay on the island’s green, rainy east side. It has an older, more local feel than the resort areas, with a historic downtown of wooden storefronts, a busy farmers market and neighborhoods shaped by the sugar era. The University of Hawaii at Hilo, healthcare, government, agriculture and the base facilities of the Mauna Kea observatories support the economy, and tourism centers on the nearby volcano.

Hilo is on the opposite side of the island from the Kona coast’s resorts, about two hours away by road across the saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Flying private into Hilo International puts you about 45 minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and lets you fly direct from Honolulu, Maui or Kona on your own schedule. Visitors come to see Kilauea’s caldera, hike through lava tubes and rain forest, visit Akaka and Rainbow falls, explore the gardens along the Hamakua Coast and watch hula at the Merrie Monarch Festival.

Things to do in Hilo

When to go. Hilo is warm all year and among the rainiest cities in the United States, which keeps the gardens and waterfalls lush; mornings are often clearest. The Merrie Monarch Festival, the world’s most prestigious hula competition, takes place the week after Easter and fills hotels across town. Summer tends to be a bit drier, and winter brings more rain and cooler nights up at the volcano.
