Things to do in Lihue

Lihue is the county seat of Kauai and the island’s commercial center, home to its main airport, Nawiliwili Harbor and the government offices, shopping and hospitals that serve the whole island. The town grew up around sugar plantations, and that heritage remains visible at sites such as Kilohana and Grove Farm. Tourism now drives most of the economy, along with agriculture, the Pacific Missile Range Facility on the west side and a population of second-home owners drawn by the island’s rural, unhurried character.

  1. 01

    Waimea Canyon State Park

Called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, this deep red-rock gorge on the island’s west side offers lookouts and trails along its rim.

  2. 02

    Na Pali Coast

These towering green sea cliffs on Kauai’s northwest shore can be seen by boat, helicopter or the challenging Kalalau Trail, which requires a permit beyond the first stretch.

  3. 03

    Wailua River State Park

North of Lihue, guided kayak trips paddle up the river to a hike to Secret Falls, and Opaekaa Falls can be seen from a roadside lookout.

  4. 04

    Kauai Museum

In downtown Lihue, this museum traces the island’s geology, Native Hawaiian culture and plantation history through artifacts and photographs.

  5. 05

    Kilohana Plantation

This 1930s plantation estate offers a restored mansion with shops and a restaurant, a scenic railway through orchards and an evening luau.

  6. 06

    Poipu Beach

On the sunny south shore, Poipu’s sheltered beach offers calm swimming and snorkeling, and endangered Hawaiian monk seals often rest on the sand.
