Tennessee Technological University, known for its engineering programs, is a major presence, and Cookeville Regional Medical Center, manufacturing plants and regional retail round out the economy. The town has grown steadily as a quieter alternative to the big cities, and its downtown around the historic depot has restaurants and shops.
