Things to do in Frankfort

Frankfort is Kentucky’s capital, a small city set in a deep bend of the Kentucky River, and state government is its largest employer. Lawmakers, lobbyists, attorneys and state agency staff fill the Capitol and its annex during legislative sessions, while the surrounding valley has become one of the most visited stretches of bourbon country. Buffalo Trace Distillery, one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States, sits on the river’s edge, and Castle & Key has restored the historic Old Taylor Distillery a few miles southwest of town. Kentucky State University is here as well.

    This National Historic Landmark distillery on the Kentucky River offers free tours and tastings, with brands including Eagle Rare and Blanton’s, and is known for its rare annual releases.

    Kentucky State Capitol

    The Beaux-Arts capitol, completed in 1910, offers tours of its marble interior and rotunda, and its large floral clock outside is one of Frankfort’s landmarks.

    Southwest of town, the restored Old Taylor Distillery is an ornate stone castle, with a springhouse and gardens on grounds once built to welcome visitors.
