Frankfort is Kentucky’s capital, a small city set in a deep bend of the Kentucky River, and state government is its largest employer. Lawmakers, lobbyists, attorneys and state agency staff fill the Capitol and its annex during legislative sessions, while the surrounding valley has become one of the most visited stretches of bourbon country. Buffalo Trace Distillery, one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States, sits on the river’s edge, and Castle & Key has restored the historic Old Taylor Distillery a few miles southwest of town. Kentucky State University is here as well.

Frankfort is about 25 miles west of Lexington and 55 miles east of Louisville, and Capital City Airport sits just outside downtown, which makes it easy to fly in for a day at the Capitol or a bourbon weekend without driving from either city. Visitors can tour the Beaux-Arts State Capitol and its floral clock, visit Daniel Boone’s grave in Frankfort Cemetery, sample bourbon balls at Rebecca Ruth Candy and paddle the Kentucky River. The thoroughbred farms of the Bluegrass and Woodford Reserve Distillery are just to the east.
