Louisville is Kentucky’s largest city and a major center for logistics, healthcare and manufacturing. UPS runs its Worldport global air hub at the city’s airport, Humana and Yum! Brands are headquartered here, GE Appliances builds products at its sprawling Appliance Park and Ford assembles vehicles at two large plants. The University of Louisville and the city’s hospital systems add thousands of jobs, and bourbon has returned to the downtown streets where it was once traded, with working distilleries open along Main Street’s Whiskey Row.

For many visitors, Louisville means the first Saturday in May, when the Kentucky Derby fills Churchill Downs and the city’s hotels. Flying private makes Derby weekend far simpler, and it is just as useful the rest of the year for business trips and for touring bourbon country, where distilleries in Bardstown, Clermont and Frankfort are an hour or less away. Bowman Field, one of the oldest continuously operating airports in North America, sits a few miles east of downtown near the city’s eastern neighborhoods. Visitors also come for the Muhammad Ali Center, the Louisville Slugger factory, the Speed Art Museum and the Olmsted-designed parks.

Things to do in Louisville

When to go. Spring is Louisville’s marquee season. The Kentucky Derby Festival opens in April with Thunder Over Louisville, one of the largest annual fireworks shows in the country, and builds to the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby on the first weekend in May, when hotels sell out far in advance. Fall brings comfortable weather, bourbon festivals and the St. James Court Art Show in early October. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are mild but gray.
