Lexington sits at the heart of the Bluegrass region, where limestone-rich soil has nurtured some of the world’s finest thoroughbreds for more than two centuries. Hundreds of horse farms surround the city, and Keeneland’s race meets and horse auctions bring owners, breeders and buyers from around the world. The University of Kentucky and UK HealthCare are the city’s largest employers, Toyota’s largest manufacturing plant anywhere is in nearby Georgetown, and the region’s bourbon distilleries add both industry and tourism.

Blue Grass Airport is just across the road from Keeneland, which makes private flying the most practical way to attend the sales or the races and leave the same day. Flying direct also saves a long connection for horse owners and business travelers visiting from other states. Beyond horses, Lexington offers Wildcats basketball at Rupp Arena, the downtown restaurant scene and historic homes such as Ashland, the estate of statesman Henry Clay. Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace and other distilleries are within half an hour, and Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill and the horse farms of Versailles and Paris make easy side trips.

When to go. April and October are Lexington’s signature months, when Keeneland’s spring and fall race meets bring crowds and the countryside is at its most beautiful. The Kentucky Three-Day Event, an elite international eventing competition, takes place at the Kentucky Horse Park in late April. September brings the Keeneland yearling sale and the start of bourbon season, and fall foliage peaks in October. Summers are warm and humid, and winters are relatively mild.
