Paducah sits where the Tennessee River meets the Ohio, and the river has shaped its economy for two centuries: towboat operators, barge lines and marine services are major employers, along with healthcare, rail and manufacturing. The city has also built a reputation as an arts destination. It is home to the National Quilt Museum, and its LowerTown Arts District grew out of a program that invited artists to restore historic homes. Paducah was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art in 2013.

Barkley Regional Airport lies west of the city, and flying private makes Paducah easy to reach from St. Louis, Nashville and Memphis, each a drive of two to three hours. For leisure travelers, the city is a gateway to Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley and Land Between the Lakes, a large wooded peninsula with elk and bison, trails and campgrounds. Houseboat rentals, bass tournaments and lakefront second homes make the lakes a regional getaway. In town, the floodwall murals depict Paducah’s history, and restaurants and galleries line the historic downtown near the riverfront.
