Bardstown is Kentucky’s second-oldest city, founded in 1780, and it calls itself the Bourbon Capital of the World with good reason. Heaven Hill, Barton 1792, Willett, Lux Row and Bardstown Bourbon Company all operate distilleries in and around town, while Maker’s Mark in Loretto and Jim Beam in Clermont are short drives away. Rows of aging warehouses dot the surrounding countryside, and bourbon now supports a large share of the area’s jobs along with tourism and agriculture. The historic downtown has inns, taverns and the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral, one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals west of the Appalachians.

Bardstown is about 40 miles south of Louisville, and Samuels Field, just outside town, lets bourbon enthusiasts and business visitors fly right to the center of distillery country. A private flight makes it easy to pack several distillery tours into a long weekend and skip the drive from Louisville. Visitors also come for My Old Kentucky Home State Park, the abbey where Thomas Merton lived, Bernheim Forest’s trails and arboretum, and Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace in Hodgenville, about 30 minutes west.

When to go. Fall is prime time in Bardstown, especially in September, when the Kentucky Bourbon Festival draws enthusiasts from around the world for tastings, seminars and special releases. October brings fall colors to the knobs and farmland. Spring is lovely, with fewer crowds and mild weather, and it pairs well with a Derby trip to Louisville. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are mild and quiet, with some distilleries running holiday events.
