Things to do in Albany

Albany has been the capital of New York since 1797, and state government still shapes its economy and its skyline, from the grand State Capitol to the modernist towers of the Empire State Plaza.     Completed in 1899 after three decades of construction, the Capitol mixes Romanesque and Renaissance styles, and free tours show off its Million Dollar Staircase and ornate legislative chambers.

    Nelson Rockefeller’s monumental government complex lines a long plaza of reflecting pools, and holds a notable collection of modern art and an observation deck in the Corning Tower.
