When you land

Things to do in Newport

Newport is the busiest working port on the central Oregon coast, set on Yaquina Bay with a fishing fleet that lands Dungeness crab, rockfish, shrimp and albacore. Ocean science is a big part of the town’s identity, with Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center and NOAA’s Pacific marine operations base on the bay, and tourism, fishing and seafood processing make up much of the economy. The Historic Bayfront, Nye Beach’s cottages and inns, and two lighthouses give it plenty of character.

  1. 01

    Oregon Coast Aquarium

On Yaquina Bay, the aquarium features sea otters, seals and seabirds outdoors and walk-through tunnels surrounded by sharks and rays.

  2. 02

    Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area

North of town, Oregon’s tallest lighthouse stands on a headland with tidepools, seabird colonies and frequent whale and seal sightings.

  3. 03

    Historic Bayfront

Fish processing plants, seafood restaurants, galleries and shops line the working waterfront, where sea lions lounge on the docks below.

  4. 04

    Nye Beach

This historic neighborhood above a wide sandy beach has cottages, inns, cafés and galleries, a short walk from the ocean.

  5. 05

    Hatfield Marine Science Center

Oregon State University’s marine research center on Yaquina Bay has a public visitor center with exhibits on ocean science and marine life.

  6. 06

    Cape Perpetua Scenic Area

South near Yachats, trails lead through old-growth forest to the dramatic rocky coastline of Thor’s Well and the Devil’s Churn.
