Olympia is Washington’s state capital, set at the southern end of Puget Sound with the domed Legislative Building rising above Capitol Lake. State government is the largest employer, and lobbyists, attorneys, agency staff and advocates arrive in force when the Legislature is in session from January into spring. The Evergreen State College, Saint Martin’s University, the Port of Olympia and healthcare add to the economy, and the city has a reputation for independent shops, a strong arts and music scene and one of the best farmers markets in the state.

Olympia lies about 60 miles south of Seattle on I-5, a drive that regularly bogs down through Tacoma and Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Flying private puts you at Olympia Regional Airport, a few miles south of the Capitol, so a legislative meeting or agency visit becomes a simple day trip from Spokane, the Tri-Cities or Portland. Visitors use the city as a gateway to the Olympic Peninsula and the Pacific beaches, and come for oysters from the inlets of south Puget Sound, waterfront parks and the wildlife refuge at the Nisqually River delta.

Things to do in Olympia

When to go. Olympia’s summers are dry and mild, ideal for the waterfront, boating and trips to the Olympic Peninsula, and Lakefair brings a parade and festivities in July. Spring is lush and green, with the farmers market reopening its busier season. From fall through winter the weather turns cool and rainy, while the Legislature’s session from January into spring makes it the busiest time for government business in the capital.
