Richland, Kennewick and Pasco grew together where the Yakima and Snake rivers meet the Columbia in the dry, sunny country of southeastern Washington. The region’s modern history began with the Manhattan Project’s Hanford Site, and the cleanup of that site and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory still drive much of the economy, along with engineering firms, energy, food processing and some of the most productive irrigated farmland in the country. Washington State University has a campus in Richland, and the area is one of the faster-growing metros in the state.
Seattle is more than three hours away by road over Snoqualmie Pass, and Portland is a similar trip along the Columbia. Flying private, you can land at the Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco or Richland’s own airfield and fly direct to Seattle, Boise, Spokane or other regional destinations on your own schedule, which matters for contractors and consultants who shuttle between project sites. Leisure travelers come for the wineries of Red Mountain and the Yakima Valley, river trails and boating, and the hydroplane races of the summer Water Follies.

Things to do in Tri-Cities
When to go. The Tri-Cities sit in the rain shadow of the Cascades, so the weather is dry and sunny much of the year. Summers are hot and ideal for boating, and the Water Follies brings hydroplane racing and an air show to the Columbia in late July. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for wine touring, with harvest in September and October. Winters are cold and gray at times but rarely snowy for long.
