Tacoma grew up as the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railway and remains a working port city: the Port of Tacoma, operated jointly with Seattle as the Northwest Seaport Alliance, handles a large share of the region’s container cargo. Joint Base Lewis-McChord, one of the largest military installations in the country, sits just to the south, and healthcare, logistics, manufacturing and the University of Puget Sound round out the economy. The city has also reinvented its waterfront and downtown around museums, much of it inspired by native son Dale Chihuly and the studio glass movement.

Tacoma sits about 30 miles south of Seattle on an interstate that is often jammed, so a trip through Sea-Tac can eat up much of a day. Flying private lets you land at Tacoma Narrows Airport, just across the Narrows Bridge in Gig Harbor, and be downtown in minutes. From here it is also a straightforward drive to Mount Rainier National Park, Olympia and the Kitsap Peninsula. Visitors come for the Museum District, Point Defiance’s forests and beaches, and some of the best views of Rainier anywhere on Puget Sound.

Things to do in Tacoma

When to go. Summer is Tacoma’s sunniest season, with warm, dry days for the waterfront, Point Defiance and trips up to Mount Rainier, where the high roads and wildflower meadows open by midsummer. The Washington State Fair in nearby Puyallup runs in September. Fall and winter are mild but often rainy, a good time for the museums, while spring brings blossoms and fewer crowds in the national park’s lower elevations.
