Seattle is the business capital of the Pacific Northwest, a city built on timber and shipping that now runs on software, cloud computing, aerospace, biotech and global trade. Amazon is headquartered downtown, Microsoft sits across Lake Washington in Redmond, Boeing builds airplanes in Everett and Renton, and the University of Washington and Fred Hutch anchor a deep research and medical community. The Port of Seattle links the region to Asia and Alaska, and companies from Starbucks to Nordstrom started here.

Getting around the metro area is the hard part, with bridges, water and hills funneling traffic onto a few congested routes. Flying private lets you use King County International Airport, better known as Boeing Field, a few miles south of downtown, or Paine Field and Renton if your day begins north or east, and fly direct to the San Juan Islands, Spokane, Walla Walla or Sun Valley without a hub connection. Visitors come for Pike Place Market, the Space Needle, a serious coffee and seafood culture, and day trips to Mount Rainier, the Olympic Peninsula and the wineries of Woodinville.

Things to do in Seattle

When to go. July through September is Seattle’s dry season, with long, mild days ideal for boating, hiking and side trips into the mountains, and Seafair brings hydroplane races and an air show over Lake Washington in early August. Spring brings tulip fields in the Skagit Valley to the north. From October through April the weather turns gray and drizzly, though rarely cold, and the Cascade ski areas open within easy reach.

  1. 01

    Pike Place Market

Operating since 1907 above the Elliott Bay waterfront, the market packs fishmongers, produce stalls, craft vendors, bakeries and small restaurants into a warren of levels overlooking Puget Sound.

  2. 02

    Space Needle

Built for the 1962 World’s Fair, Seattle’s signature tower has an observation level with floor-to-ceiling glass and a rotating glass floor, with views of Mount Rainier, the Cascades and Olympics on clear days.

  3. 03

    Chihuly Garden and Glass

Next to the Space Needle, galleries, a soaring glasshouse and an outdoor garden showcase the large-scale glass sculpture of Tacoma-born artist Dale Chihuly.

  4. 04

    Museum of Pop Culture

Housed in a swooping Frank Gehry building at Seattle Center, MoPOP explores music, film, science fiction and gaming, with exhibits on hometown artists Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana.

  5. 05

    Hiram M. Chittenden Locks

The Ballard Locks lift boats between Puget Sound and the city’s freshwater lakes, and in summer a fish ladder viewing room lets visitors watch salmon migrate upstream.

  6. 06

    Olympic Sculpture Park

The Seattle Art Museum’s free waterfront park sets large modern sculptures, including works by Alexander Calder and Richard Serra, on a green slope above Elliott Bay.
