Port Angeles is the largest city on the north Olympic Peninsula, set between the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the steep wall of the Olympic Mountains. It began as a timber and fishing port, and forest products, marine trades, healthcare and tourism still shape the economy. The city is the main gateway to Olympic National Park, whose headquarters are here, and its harbor is the departure point for the passenger and car ferry across the strait to Victoria, British Columbia.
Reaching Port Angeles by road from Seattle means a ferry crossing and a long drive up the peninsula, or a lengthy loop around through Tacoma, and either way it takes most of a morning. Flying private lands you at William R. Fairchild International Airport on the west edge of town, minutes from the ferry dock and the road up to Hurricane Ridge. That makes it practical to spend a weekend in the park’s mountains, rain forests and coastline. Visitors also come for the Elwha River, where one of the largest dam removal projects in history has let salmon return, the lavender farms of nearby Sequim and the glacier-carved waters of Lake Crescent.

Things to do in Port Angeles
When to go. July through September brings the driest, sunniest weather to the Olympic Peninsula and the best access to Hurricane Ridge and the high country. Sequim’s lavender fields bloom in July, and fall brings quieter trails and salmon runs in the rivers. Winter is mild in town but wet, and the national park’s rain forests are at their greenest. Mountain roads and services can be limited in winter, so check conditions before you go.
