Spokane is the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis and the commercial center of the Inland Northwest, a region that takes in eastern Washington, north Idaho and parts of Montana and Oregon. Healthcare is its biggest employer, with major hospital systems drawing patients from hundreds of miles around, alongside Gonzaga University, Washington State University’s health sciences campus, Fairchild Air Force Base, manufacturing, agriculture and a growing tech and aerospace supply sector. The city hosted the 1974 World’s Fair, which turned an old rail yard by the Spokane Falls into the downtown park that defines it today.

Spokane is about four and a half hours by road from Seattle across Snoqualmie Pass, which can be slow or closed in winter, and many destinations in the region are farther still. Flying private puts you at Felts Field, just east of downtown, or Spokane International, and connects directly to the Palouse, Walla Walla, Sun Valley or the lake towns of north Idaho. Visitors come for the falls, Gonzaga’s basketball program, golf, Mount Spokane’s ski slopes and Coeur d’Alene, about 30 miles east.

Things to do in Spokane

When to go. Spokane has four distinct seasons and far more sunshine than western Washington. Summers are warm and dry, perfect for the river, golf and north Idaho’s lakes. Lilac Festival events and the Bloomsday run fill May, and Hoopfest, a giant three-on-three basketball tournament, takes over downtown streets in June. Fall brings crisp weather and Gonzaga’s basketball season, and winter brings snow and skiing at Mount Spokane and nearby Idaho resorts.
