Chelan sits at the southern end of Lake Chelan, a narrow glacial lake that stretches roughly 50 miles into the North Cascades and is one of the deepest lakes in the country. Once known mainly for apple orchards, the area has become eastern Washington’s favorite summer playground, with lakeside resorts, vacation homes, marinas and a fast-growing wine region on the slopes above the water. Tourism, real estate, construction and agriculture drive the local economy, and the population swells every summer.

Chelan is about a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Seattle over the Cascades, and the route can stretch much longer on summer Fridays or when winter weather hits the passes. Flying private lands you at Lake Chelan Airport, just outside town, so a lake weekend can start with an afternoon on the water instead of a day on the highway. Visitors swim, wakeboard and fish on the lake, taste wine in Chelan and Manson, play golf, and take the long boat ride uplake to Stehekin, a tiny village with no road connection to the outside world, at the edge of North Cascades National Park.

Late spring and early fall bring milder weather, fewer crowds and harvest at the wineries. Winter is quiet, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the hills above town and a small ski area at Echo Valley.
