When you land

Things to do in The Hamptons

The Hamptons, the string of villages and hamlets along Long Island’s South Fork, are the summer home of a large share of New York’s financial, media and fashion world. Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Sag Harbor and Amagansett mix shingled estates and grand hedgerows with potato fields, vineyards, farm stands, art galleries and wide Atlantic beaches. In season, much of Manhattan’s social and business calendar simply moves east, and the local economy is built around second homes, construction, hospitality and the people who serve them.

  1. 01

    Main Beach, East Hampton

Regularly ranked among the best beaches in the country, this wide stretch of Atlantic sand at the end of Ocean Avenue is lined with dunes and some of the area’s most famous homes.

  2. 02

    Parrish Art Museum

Housed in a long, barn-inspired building by Herzog and de Meuron in Water Mill, the museum focuses on artists of the East End, from William Merritt Chase to Fairfield Porter.

  3. 03

    Sag Harbor

A former whaling port with a walkable Main Street, a working waterfront, the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum and a mix of bookshops, galleries and restaurants.

  4. 04

    Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center

In Springs, the home and studio of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner can be toured in season, including the paint-spattered floor where Pollock made his drip paintings.

  5. 05

    Wölffer Estate Vineyard

This Sagaponack winery is known for its rosé, and its tasting room and wine stand draw crowds on summer afternoons with views over the vines and pastures.

  6. 06

    Shelter Island

A short ferry ride from North Haven, this quiet island between the forks is home to the Mashomack Preserve, which protects about a third of the island with trails, tidal creeks and shoreline.
